Conditions Required for Planting Grapes
1. Location & Temperature
You need to plant your grapes near a wall, or you can install a trellis system in your garden. That is because grapes are vining plants and will need support to grow.
I’d personally advise planting it near the wall of your home so that it can get some extra heat.
It is very important to select a sunny location that will not be exposed to strong winds. Lack of sunlight can ruin even the most unpretentious varieties.
Grapes like to grow in a warm environment. So, it is best to plant them in the spring.
Note:
When the plant bears fruits in summer, appropriate shading measures need to be taken to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
2. Soil
In order to have an easy growth process, make sure your soil is a rich, fertile, and well-drained variety. If you seem to think your soil quality is poor, mix ripe compost or humus into the soil before planting.
3. Water & Fertilizer
Water:
Grapes have a relatively high demand for water. During the fruit period, make sure to give it sufficient water and do not let the soil dry. However, be careful to not overwater as it can block the roots from breathing and lead to root rot.

Using Seeds:
If you’re growing your grapes from seeds, make sure to choose good quality seeds and germinate them in soil. Preferably, germinate your seeds indoors in a warm place. Another key step to succeed in the germination process, keep the soil moist all the time, not too wet and not dry.
After a few weeks, when you get a grapevine with 3-4 leaves, transfer your plant to either a bigger pot or the ground.
After that, you can follow the following steps similar to using bought saplings:

- Dig a hole with a diameter and depth of about 19-24 inches (50-60 cm)
- Apply enough fertilizer.
- Pour soil of around 4 inches (10 cm) in height.
- Plant your sapling.
- Cover it with unmixed soil.
- Place a supporting system of your choice, such as a trellis. Or just a normal long stick and connect it to the plant. This will help the plant to grow upwards. Having support for your plant will not let the fruits, later on, grow on the ground which can endanger the plant with different diseases.
- Finally, water your plant well.
Post-planting Management
After planting your grapevine, good management is required. First, pay attention to pruning and make sure to prune on time. You will also need to make sure to provide sufficient water and fertilizer to promote plant growth.
Additionally, it is necessary to prevent pests and diseases. Bacteria infestations and pests can harm and even kill your plant if you don’t act on time to save your precious little grape plant.
